PRETTY VACANT RSS

Welcome to Pretty Vacant, a forthcoming arts collaboration between artists Christopher Guest and Darren Washington based in Newcastle under Lyme, UK.

The project has been funded by The British Arts Council and will see the two artists from differing creative backgrounds coming together to create work in empty shop windows in Newcastle Under Lyme.

The project will be a celebration of the “Local Heroes” of Newcastle Town. Local heroes are not the recognised celebrities we all know about, ie Stanley Matthews, Robbie Williams, but rather those individuals who are of unique character and make the area what is it..and what it is- is not what you read in the national press!

Taking place in the large empty windows in a vacant unit in Warner Village, in the heart of the town, the artists will hold regular research workshops around specific venues we have identified- meeting the public and talking through our ideas with them. In a way this project will be shaped by the public as it will be their character traits and vivacity that will make this project successful.

We will use our respective creative practices in graffiti and drawing, photography and digital media to create large scale projections and cut out forms, inviting the audience to look for the humorous, beautiful and fantastical aspects of those around us.

Over the coming weeks and months we will be posting regular updates on this blog, keeping you up to date with our venue visits, interesting people we have met and also documenting how us as two artists from very different creative backgrounds can learn together.

Darren took this pretty ace photo of Chris during the live graffiti sessions. The photo shows Chris and his sketchbook ideas for the graffiti mural, which is dividing the Pretty Vacant unit while the cut out characters are being made.
Later this month Darren will be making his photography display at the unit so check back regularly for updates!

Theres been more graffiti shenanigans at Pretty Vacant lately, with Chris running a live painting demo at the unit. The shop will be divided by the artists work, with two large panels of graffiti and photography, whilst large cut out characters are being made behind the scenes.

So keep checking the blog for more updates, or pop down to the shop itself and say hi to Chris & Darren!

Chris will be at Pretty Vacant in Newcastle Under Lyme tonight with some live graffiti skillage!

Whilst we’re making the large cut out characters weve partitioned the studio with a graffiti mural for the public to watch Chris in action. Later in the month Darren will be displaying his photography work too.

So pop along tonight at Pretty Vacant in the Vue Cinema unit and give Chris some encouragement- it can feel like a fishbowl in there sometimes!

Chris has been housebound following a knee operation, so as a distraction from Loose Women on TV he’s made this slightly overblown trailer for Pretty Vacant vs 2FLYKRU

Hes also working on new cut out graffiti characters and hopes to be back in the unit soon so keep your eyes on the blog for news.

Congratulations to 2FLYKRU for winning the UDO British Street Dance Championships too!

So the mid opening went really well with lots of people interested in the project and seeing how empty shop premises can be used for creative purposes. The evening started with projections of the graffiti work in progress and the artists inviting local people to be photographed to be made into life size cut outs later on in the project.

Later on the space was used as a rehearsal area for 2FLYkru- local street dancers who are training for the British Championships. We wanted to show how the space can be used for creatives and to also celebrate local people and their achievements.

The mid opening was a great chance to open up a previously closed shop premises to the pubic and to inform them of this British Arts Council funded project, Thanks to everyone who came and chatted with us!

Over the coming month we’ll be planning and working on the the project  so keep checking back for updates!
